If you follow this blog or any of my social media accounts for the past 3 years, you might be familiar with the Danish Duo: Cancer. Cancer is comprised of some of my favorite Danish musicians; Nikolaj Manuel Vonsild (When Saints Go Machine) and Kristian Finne Kristensen (Chorus Grant). This duo put out a great mini-album, Ragazzi, back in 2014, but many have been wondering and waiting if they were going to go a little further with this side project. Alas, they have finally released their debut album, Totem, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.

For those unfamiliar with this group and the foreboding music they create, look no further to start your quest than the first track off this album, “Esca”. The first line of the song proclaims, “say you’ll love me again”, in the most urging and pressing sense. It almost wreaks of desperation. Desperation in the most sensible of matters though. Most of the songs on this album are about love, loss, death, and the very depressing consequences. These two artists have forged a bond out of the foundation of our saddest truths and fears. To experience the band Cancer, you will most likely shed a lot of tears. It is probably one of the most enduring things about them. Every song is so sad, each isolated instrument and harrowing vocals, evoke all of the emotions. They accomplish what so few can do. So if you haven’t already, please take some time out of your day and embark on this musical journey called Cancer. I hope it hurts your heart a little bit, but also makes you happy to find such beautiful music that can speak to us all.

Enjoy.
